Madison,
WI, the state Capitol, was the scene for the first
annual Bicycle Education Leaders Conference. They
even had a criterium around the Capitol building to
welcome delegates from across the country! |
| Robbie
Webber of the Wisconsin Bike Federation manned a booth
at the start finish line. Lots of literature and even
coloring for kids. |

Madison,
indeed, all of Wisconsin is known for being bike friendly.
Not only did many of the city streets have well designed
bike accommodations, but the motorists were friendly
as well. I had more than one motorist stop before
making a right turn to let me go by. |

The
new Southwest Trail is a magnificant rail to trail
conversion that runs from the edge of the University
of Wisconsin through six neighborhoods out to connect
with a great east/west trail. The grade is 1 1/2
percent going downhill into town. This makes for
a great commute. Almost all of the highway crossings
are grade separated.
We
were hosted at a reception by Graber, maker of Saris
bones racks and CycleOps trainers among other bicycle
accessories. Great people and great products.

We
knew it wasn't Texas. Madison is in the middle of
Wisconsin dairy country and that means lots of cheese
and some of the best ice cream ever. |

This
fine example of "yard art" was on the route
we rode Wednesday afternoon. We took it as Wisconsin
humor and not a threat. |
