The east-central Austin headquarters lay right in the path of the storms and sustained thousands of dollars in water damage when ankle-deep run-off spilled through the facilities.

Water poured in through the emergency exit doors and was several inches deep in no time. Executive Director Gayle Cummins and volunteer Robin Stallings frantically waded from computer to computer attempting to unplug them and get them up on desks, chairs and tables where the water couldn’t reach them.

The rising water and rapid-fire lightning combined to damage not only electronic equipment in the office, but a large quantity of advocacy and education printed materials stored here.

Staff and volunteers turned out the next day to remove everything from the three-room office area. Damaged materials were separated from undamaged items, which were all cleaned by hand. Floors were cleaned and dried and everything was put back into place…all in one day.

The staff estimates that the Nov. 15 storm wreaked $5,000 to $6,000 in damage to equipment and materials in the office.

Flood clean-up volunteers included Tracy Grimsley, Dave Baker, Pete Wall and Lee Gresham, as well as Stanton Truxillo of the Austin Cycling Association and TBC contractor Robin Stallings. TBC’s Eric Anderson spearheaded the clean-up effort.
