Houston Chronicle editorial
Equity for Houston: Secret Transportation
Evaluations are not Fair Evaluations
The Texas
Transportation Commission met last week to hear
public comments on proposed highway beautification
projects for the coming year. Two issues warrant
the commission's careful attention. The first
is Houston's claim to an equitable share of the
federal funds for these projects, which range from
highway landscaping to hike and bike trails to transportation
museums. More...

Success in the 77th Legislative Session!
 |
VICTORY!
The Matthew Brown Act
was signed by Governor Rick Perry on June
15, 2001. Thank you Texas cyclists and others
around the world for your help in getting
meaningful and monumental legislation passed
for bicycling in Texas! |
| SB
238, the anti-bike bill filed by Senator Jeff
Wentworth (R-San Antonio) was left pending
in the State Affairs Committee for lack of
enough votes to bring it to the floor of the
Senate for debate. Our opposition to this
bill was successful! TBC thanks our many members
and other cyclists who took the time to come
to Austin to testify on the impact SB 238
would have on our lives and the economy of
the state. SB 238 is dead this year, but can
re-surface next session. To find out what
you can do to help stop anti-cycling legislation,
attend the 2001 Texas Bike Summit in Wichita
Falls on August 24.
Governor Perry
vetoed HB 674, which would have allowed
local authorities to permit the parking
of motor vehicles on sidewalks under certain
circumstances. From a mobility standpoint
this was a bad solution to a relatively
minor problem. It seems that some people
have driveways that are too short to park
in without taking up the sidewalk.

Proposal for trails in Sam Houston Forest
Forest Service Release...
The Sam Houston
National Forest is considering the establishment
of approximately 50 miles of non-motorized trails
in San Jacinto County, Texas (between Cleveland
and Coldspring, near Double Lake Recreation Area).
The trail(s) would be for equestrian, mountain
biking and hiking enthusiasts. This proposal would
designate numerous existing routes as trails and
provide for development of additional routes and
trailhead facilities. Many of the existing routes
have been used for equestrian events. The trails
would be maintained as needed with waterbars and
diversion ditches. Some routes that travel along
pipeline right-of-way and roads would be relocated
to adjacent locations through the forest...Four
trailheads would be developed to disperse users
along the trail system.
If you have specific
concerns or comments on this proposal, please
send them to Timothy Bigler-District Ranger, Sam
Houston National Forest, 394 FM 1375 West, New
Waverly, TX 77358 before 1/20/2001.
If you are in need
of more information and/or would like to discuss
the proposal, please contact Chip Ernst-Forest
Recreational Planner at (936) 344-6205 ext. 244.
