Best Hill Country Towns

Fredericksburg

90 min west of Austin. German heritage, Main Street shopping, 50+ wine tasting rooms, Enchanted Rock nearby. The epicenter of Hill Country tourism. Charming B&Bs, excellent restaurants (Otto's, Vaudeville). Can be touristy on weekends but earned it.

Wimberley

45 min SW of Austin. Art galleries, Blue Hole swimming, Wimberley Square, Jacob's Well. The creative soul of the Hill Country. Saturday market (March-December) is one of the best in Texas. Mountain views, cypress trees, and a slower pace.

Dripping Springs

30 min west of Austin. The "Gateway to the Hill Country." Craft distilleries (Treaty Oak, Deep Eddy Vodka), breweries (Jester King), wedding venues. Growing fast but still has Hill Country character. Great restaurants.

Johnson City

60 min west of Austin. LBJ's hometown. The Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park. Pecan Street Brewing. Science Mill (kids museum). Small, quiet, and authentic. Great base for exploring Pedernales Falls.

Marble Falls

60 min NW of Austin. Gateway to the Highland Lakes. Lake Marble Falls, Flat Creek Estate winery, Bluebonnet Cafe (legendary pie). More affordable than Fredericksburg. Good base for lake activities.

Gruene (New Braunfels)

50 min south of Austin. Gruene Hall (oldest dance hall in Texas, since 1878). Gruene Mansion Inn. Tubing on the Guadalupe River. The Gristmill restaurant overlooking the river. One of the best day trips from Austin.

The Wine Road (290)

Highway 290 between Johnson City and Fredericksburg has 30+ wineries. Becker Vineyards, William Chris, Pedernales Cellars, Grape Creek. Book a tasting tour or self-drive. Most rooms: $15-25 for a tasting flight. Spring and fall are best seasons.

Jester King Brewery

Dripping Springs. Farmhouse ales on a Hill Country ranch. The most unique brewery in Texas. Pizza, gorgeous grounds, live music. Reservation recommended. More than a brewery — it's an experience.

Duchman Family Winery

Driftwood. Italian varietals grown in Texas soil. Beautiful property, excellent wines, wood-fired pizza. One of the most acclaimed wineries in Texas. 30 min from Austin.

Swimming & Outdoors

Enchanted Rock

Near Fredericksburg. A massive pink granite dome. Hike to the top (moderate, 30-45 min). 360-degree Hill Country views. Reservation required on weekends. One of the most iconic outdoor experiences in Texas. $8/person.

Garner State Park

Concan. 2.5 hours from Austin. The Frio River. Crystal clear, spring-fed, cold water. Tubing, swimming, hiking. The summer dance under the stars. Texas families have been coming here for generations. Cabin reservations book months ahead.

Pedernales Falls

Johnson City. $6. Dramatic falls on the Pedernales River. Swimming below the falls, hiking, birding. An hour from Austin. The falls are most impressive after rain. Stunning Hill Country scenery on the drive in.

Jacob's Well

Wimberley. Free (permit required). 140-foot deep natural spring. Crystal clear, 68 degrees. Limited daily access — book your permit in advance at Hays County website. One of the most photographed natural features in Texas.

Wildflower Season

Peak: late March through mid-April. Bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, and dozens of other species carpet the Hill Country roadsides. Best viewing: Highway 29 (Burnet to Llano), Willow City Loop (near Fredericksburg), Highway 71 west of Austin. The Ennis Bluebonnet Trail (south of Dallas) is the most famous spot. Pull over safely for photos — everyone does.
