We're
back from Capitol Hill! The 2003 National Bike Summit®
was a resounding success. It brought together nearly
400 bicyclists from 47 states and abroad, representing
advocacy, industry, transportation and public health
to share important concerns and best practices.
TBC's
eight-member delegation led a whirlwind of activity
on National Bike Lobby Day as we split into teams
to visit 29 Congressional offices, including both
of our Texas senators. On the heavy hitter appointments
where we scheduled Linda Armstrong, we got in to
talk directly with the members of Congress. They
loved hearing about the success of the recent Texas
Safe Routes to School announcement, especially since
the reauthorization of the federal transportation
bill will include a similar national program.
Overall,
Summit participants met with some 80 Senators and
over 300 Representatives or their staffs to educate
Congress on the reauthorization of TEA-21 and other
critical advocacy issues. As Rep. Earl Blumenauer
(D-OR) said, "I don't think a national movement
with more trajectory and momentum with a more diverse
group has ever come together this quickly."
